# Design with information coming back from the field

Design offices work in a moving environment: revisions, quantity takeoffs, supervision reports, and an expectation of exact numbers throughout.

## What designers keep running into

**Preparing a bill of quantities, then updating it.** Every design change means updating quantities by hand across several file versions, which is where errors and delays come from.

**Keeping track of why the design changed.** Without one place holding the instructions and the reasons, version control and design consistency both suffer.

**Design supervision on site.** Getting to the current drawing in the field, or issuing a supervision report from there, is awkward, so instructions go undocumented and get carried out badly.

## What Inspector does about it

**Quantities out of the drawing.** When the design is finished the bill of quantities is produced automatically, with no manual measuring into spreadsheets. When the design changes, the quantities update, and the system shows the difference between versions.

### From the field

A lighting designer produced an execution estimate five minutes after finishing the design. Every later revision on that project needed no update to the bill of quantities, because it is derived rather than maintained.

### Frequently asked questions

    Do we have to change how we draw?

     Not the way you draw, but the layers have to be organised consistently. We set that standard up with you once, as a legend, and from then on it carries across drawings and projects.

     Which CAD files does it read?

     DXF, exported from AutoCAD or any package that writes it. No BIM model is required.

     Can several offices work on the same project?

     Yes, and that is one of the main reasons to use a shared legend. Work from several offices becomes comparable instead of each office counting its own way.
