# Accurate quantities, without the spreadsheets

Instead of chasing manual measurements, photographs passed around on WhatsApp and tables that get updated once a month, Inspector computes quantities from the drawing and from the field record.

Changes are documented, quantities update, and the expensive mistakes are prevented rather than discovered at the account stage.

## What quantity surveyors keep running into

**Manual calculation.** Multiple sheets and scattered formulas produce duplicates, rounding errors and contradictory versions that do not surface until the account.

**Updating changes.** Every revision means walking through the BoQ items and rewiring formulas, instead of one update that propagates.

**Showing the client where a quantity came from.** Without a clear link between the item, the drawing and the place on site, it is hard to defend the account.

## What Inspector does about it

**Automatic takeoff.** The bill of quantities is computed straight from the drawings. On our own projects this saves up to 40% of the working time.

**Dynamic updating.** A design change updates every affected item on its own, with no item-by-item pass through a spreadsheet.

**Collector.** The execution engineer reports what was actually built that day, week or month, with photographs, location and any other evidence.

### From the field

On a residential neighbourhood of 1,500 units, one change to the lighting drawing required updating more than 100 items in the bill of quantities. Done by hand it took two working days. In Inspector it took under an hour.

### What makes it different

**Design alternatives:** test a change and see the quantity and cost effect immediately.
**Automation:** calculation and updating happen without you.
**GIS underneath:** a location-based system, so what happens on site reaches the office directly.

### Frequently asked questions

How accurate is it against a manual takeoff?

The geometry is exact, because it is read from the drawing rather than measured off it. What decides the result is how the layers are mapped to the price list, and that mapping is set up once and reused.

Can it output to our own price list structure?

Yes. Output follows the client’s price list and section structure, in Excel or PDF, ready to be put next to the contract bill of quantities.

What about items the drawing does not describe?

They stay manual, and the system flags them rather than hiding them. The point is not to compute everything, it is that every computed quantity can be traced to the line it came from.
