What Inspector does about it

Quantities out of the drawing. When the design is finished the bill of quantities is produced automatically, with no manual measuring into spreadsheets. When the design changes, the quantities update, and the system shows the difference between versions.

Version tracking. Design changes are presented plainly, with reports that set out what moved.

Collector for design supervision. The report can be issued the moment the site visit ends.

A lighting designer produced an execution estimate five minutes after finishing the design. Every later revision on that project needed no update to the bill of quantities, because it is derived rather than maintained.

Do we have to change how we draw?

Not the way you draw, but the layers have to be organised consistently. We set that standard up with you once, as a legend, and from then on it carries across drawings and projects.

DXF, exported from AutoCAD or any package that writes it. No BIM model is required.

Yes, and that is one of the main reasons to use a shared legend. Work from several offices becomes comparable instead of each office counting its own way.
